Newlands Rotary is responsible for the Course Management of the annual Cape Argus / Pick 'n Pay Cycle Tour , the largest cycle event of its kind in the world which takes place each year in March. The event was founded in 1978 and our parent Club, Claremont , in partnership with the Pedal Power Association, are the joint organisers. Entries have grown from 525 in 1978 to over 31,000 in 2009, more than enough to keep Newlands Rotary busy on the day and in the build up thereto. Newlands Rotary is responsible, amongst other things, for running 18 Refreshment Stations, providing close to 320 Marshalls, 12 Sector Marshalls, 7 Mini Sweep Vehicles and trailers, 6 Mega Sweep Buses and drop side trucks, and assessing the considerable risk posed to cyclists by 2060 cats' eyes. For those disposed to checking our numbers, there are 1,292 on the downhill stretches of the route, 542 on the straight and 226 heading uphill! In the early hours of the morning 'on the big day', we cover at least 500 of these. Newlands' contribution is made possible by collaboration with Rotary Clubs in District 9350 and other volunteer organisations. For the 2009 event our Rotary partners were the Clubs of Hout Bay, Helderberg Sunrise, Blouberg, Breede River Winelands, Cape of Good Hope, Constantia, Groote Schuur, Kromboom, Paarl, Stellenbosch, Table Bay, Wellington and Wynberg, the Stellenbosch Rotaract Club and the members of the Khayelitsha Club (in formation).
