Sivuyiseni Primary School in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, is one of a number of schools benefiting from a Rotary International Matching Grant. The Grant collaboration enables the partner clubs to provide the Foundation Phase Kagiso Readers, developed by Literacy for All, to disadvantaged schools in township areas around Cape Town. An alarming 60% of learners in South Africa reach Grade 3 without the required levels of literacy to perform successfully in their school careers. The Literacy for All programme is unique in allowing schools to teach Reading and Writing in the mother-tongue of the children they serve, regardless of the number of languages represented in the classroom. Seen below are Literacy for All co-founder, Barbara Coombe, and Sivuyiseni Principal, Mr Mtandeki and, below that, a group of teachers commence training. Readers are available for Grades 1 to 3 and are published in 11 languages with corresponding titles and material for each reader. This enables teachers to provide mother-tongue training even where there are multiple languages spoken per class. Seen below are English, Afrikaans and Xhosa books for each Grade.
