By now, you might have seen key people from our Rotary district wearing bracelets on their wrists. They have initiated a campaign to celebrate Rotary‘s introduction of the newest area of focus, by wearing bracelets which will fund ten environmental projects as well as support Relate, a non-profit organisation.

We would like to encourage you, your club, and members to join us in this acknowledgement that the environment has Rotary’s focus.

In celebration of Rotary’s, Supporting the Environment, area of focus, the Rotary Club of Newlands is proud to launch the “Rotary in the Environment” bracelet collection in partnership with the Relate Trust. Relate’s beautiful handmade bracelets, protect lives and creates livelihoods through job creation for vulnerable communities. We have chosen ten causes that support the environment and nature conservation, and we hope that you will join hands with us to bring hope where it is needed most. Each bracelet bought earns funds for the environmental causes, 2 of which are Rotary projects.

This limited-edition collection will be available on the Relate online store for a cost of R350, including delivery and VAT in South Africa.

Want  to support this project but prefer to donate the bracelets rather than receive them? You can purchase a Rotary in the Environment Gift Voucher HERE. Your voucher purchase will donate Rotary in the Environment bracelets to the underprivileged, support Rotary’s environmental area of focus and create jobs for low-income communities.

The causes include:

  2. Endangered Wildlife Trust
  3. Endangered Wildlife Trust – Ocean Project
  4. Endangered Wildlife Trust – Birds of Prey
  5. Endangered Wildlife Trust – Wild Dog Project
  6. Honorary Rangers of SA National Parks
  7. Elephants Alive
  8. Guard Dogs for Conservation
  9. Rotary Youth Camp Glencairn (Rotary project)
  10. I am a Water Warrior (Rotary project)

We are asking you to help Newlands Rotary and Relate reach our target of raising R1 000 000 for these worthy causes by influencing your Rotary and other networks to go to the Relate website HERE and order a box or two of the “Rotary in the Environment” bracelets.

Our Service Above Self motto has never been more critical than in the time of COVID. By supporting Relate, we are connecting people to be part of the solution where many caring people contributing a small amount can make a significant impact.

What about people from other countries buying bracelets?  Relate will deliver bracelets to any destination. The costs will be a little more. For example, the price of a pack in the US will be $30, which includes door to door delivery. Deliveries outside South Africa are estimated to take three weeks, so start shopping for Christmas presents now.

Are the bracelets environmentally friendly?  Yes. The beads are made from small glass pellets. All material used is recyclable.

What do Rotarians get out of this project? Being altruistic is always beneficial. There has been little acknowledgement and celebtration that Rotarians can now focus and get funding for environmental projects. Funds raised through the sale of bracelets will also support two Rotary projects.

  • I am a Water Warrior – supporting water and sanitation-related projects, for example, the provision of water filters,
  • Rotary Youth Camp in Glencairn, Cape Town, where the removal of alien vegetation is having positive impacts on the plant and animal life, as well providing an outdoor classroom to many of Cape Town’s children – influencing them to value the environment.

Why involve overseas clubs?  South Africa is blessed with a diverse and beautiful landscape with such a great variety of flora and fauna.  Many people appreciate what we have to offer and would be willing to support these worthwhile projects. Many wildlife projects have been affected by Covid-19 and would benefit with as much support as possible. Furthermore, Rotary is a global organisation and we should all be celebrating the newest area of focus.
